GYNECOMASTIA
Gynecomastia is the growth of the mammary gland in men due to multiple factors that interfere with its development as it could be a hormonal imbalance that occurs in true gynecomastia. It can have a presentation of up to 40% of the male population.
Because the gynecomastia emulates breasts that are a very feminine characteristic, it creates discomfort and cosmetic annoyance for men masculinity.
We can classify it according to their actual content between glandular, fat or mixed according to each specific case, additionally it may be unilateral or bilateral.
The main reasons why patients consult for gynecomastia are either cosmetic or pain in some cases, however we note that not all gynecomasties require surgical treatment and should be evaluated by the plastic surgeon to determine the surgical indication accordingly.
Depending on the size and type of the gynecomastia we will define together with the patient the surgical procedure best suited to the specific case.
We often find most frequently the pseudogynecomastia or adipose gynecomastia which is more related with generalized o localized weight gaining.
To prevent symptoms and psycho-emotional damage, we should promptly solve such major pathologies thereby avoiding further trauma to the patient. A significant portion of patients are in their teens or immediate post-adolescence period. If this type of procedure is required, this involves the removal of the mammary gland through a cut in the areola and in required cases; liposuction is used to remove fat.
Thanks to the new techniques developed today, the vast majority of cases can be resolved through small incisions in the armpit by which we can access the glands without obvious scarring and allowing us doing it under local anesthesia.
However, although the possibility of breast cancer in men is low, all removed material corresponding to the mammary gland must be sent to pathology to be studied so we’re able to give a final result to our patients.
